Calendimaggio in Assisi A Medieval Traditional Spring Festival represents the historical town of Assisi 3rd -10th May 2016 seven day experience event £980 The Assisani (the residents of Assisi) will spend a year preparing for this festival. During this period, the residents are dressed in medieval costumes. In the old medieval time, the town of Assisi was divided in two parts called the upper (sopra) and lower (sotto) by the opposite parties. Even though the two parties reached an agreement in the beginning of spring, then the battles unexpectedly started again.

TYPICAL ITINERARY
DAY ONE - Friday Stansted to Perugia Check in for our RyanAir flight to Perugia. Flight Stansted 7.30 am Depart 11.05 Arrive. On arrival transfer by mini coach to our accommodation in the old town of Assisi, at St Antony’s Convent for a ten-night stay. Room allocation and lunch a local restaurant. Walking tour introduction around Assisi. Dinner may be taken in a local restaurant on each ev ening of our stay.
DAY TWO Saturday - SAN DAMIANO This morning we will celebrate Mass in a chapel in the Convent. After breakfast we visit St Clare’s Basilica, which now houses the Crucifix that called to St. Francis, later we meet together and walk to San Damiano Church which was where St Francis received the message from the Crucifix “to go and repair my church ……” later, St Clare spent her cloistered life and here and founded her community. After dinner we will meet for a prayer session in the convent.
DAY THREE Sunday ASSISI - ST Leonard’s Church After breakfast we walk through the streets of Assisi as Saints Francis and Clare would have known it, to visit the Anglican Church of St Leonard’s for our 11.00 am Eucharist. After lunch at a local restaurant we visit the San Stefano, the Cathedral of San Ruffino, the church of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Chiesa Nuova (New Church), built on the site of Francis’ house. The evening will be at free leisure/study time in Assisi.
DAY FOUR Monday -HERMITAGE - LA MADDALENA - RIVO TORTO After morning prayers and breakfast, this morning we take a twisting mini taxi ride to the Hermitage, situated high above Assisi on Monte Subasio, which was a place of retreat and meditation for Francis and his followers and is still an oasis of quiet today. Afterwards we drive down to the Chapel of La Maddelina, situation just outside Assisi on the road to Foligno, which was the leper colony where Francis From here we have the short drive to Rivo Torto, the first house of the Franciscan order before we visit the Monastery of Bose to go inside the crypt where St Francis came to the ruined church of St Matthias, and then make our return by mini bus back to the old town of Assisi.
DAY FIVE Tuesday After breakfast we visit the 17th century Basilica to first see the Porziuncola, the small chapel where Francis heard the message of his mission. The Rose garden, and The Transitus Chapel. After supper there will be an explanation of the Basilica, of St Francis, its art and history.
DAY SIX WEDNESDAY - This morning following breakfast we have a guided tour of the basilica of St Francis by a resident friar (providing an English-speaking friar is in residence at the time). The Basilica was built to house the tomb of St Francis, beginning as soon as he was canonised in 1228. Amongst all the glories of the Basilica and the tomb of St Francis, we see the frescoes attributed to Giotto in the Upper Basilica and those by Cimabue and Simone de Martine in the Lower Basilica. DAY SEVEN- THURSDAY RIETI VALLEY or Optional visit to ROME This morning after an early breakfast we travel by mini coach towards Rome and into the Rieti Valley, to visit hermitages from the early part of the Franciscan mission. Fonte Colombo, Greccio, Poggio Bustone, all had been founded early in the life of St. Francis’ mission and used during his journeys to see the Pope, negotiating and obtaining his three “rules of life”.
DAY EIGHT FRIDAY This morning we will celebrate Mass in a chapel in the Convent. After breakfast we visit La Verna and the Stigmata site to join the Franciscan Friars in procession.
DAY NINE - SATURDAY Free Day in Assisi or optional visit to the Roman sites in Assisi, The Amphitheatre, San Rufino ruins, undercroft.
DAY TEN -SUNDAY at St Leonard’s Visit the Anglican Church of St Leonard’s for our 11.00 am Eucharist. Afterwards lunch at a local restaurant. or Free day in Assisi,
DAY ELEVEN Monday This morning we celebrate in the Convent chapel then after breakfast our time is free for packing before we leave Assisi and our taxis drive us to Perugia Airport where we check in for our return flight to Stansted Flight 11.45 Depart - 13.15 Arrive. Depart for home.
